Active Distributed Fiber Optic Leak Detection

The Senowell Uptech UTS-HP1000 is an Active Distributed Temperature Sensing (A-DTS) system designed for the detection and localization of water leaks in water containment structures such as dams, ponds, dikes and water storage facilities.

The system combines linear fiber optic temperature measurement with controlled heat pulses generated through the optical fiber. This active measurement approach helps identify thermal responses associated with water filtration and leakage along the monitored structure.

Distributed Leak Detection Along the Fiber

Unlike conventional point-based leak detection systems, the UTS-HP1000 provides distributed monitoring along the sensing cable.

A hybrid cable containing fiber optics and an electrical conductor is used to perform the active measurement. The system can determine the presence of water leakage from a reading of the cable without requiring operators to rely on historical measurement data.

Automated Leak Detection and Localization

The UTS-HP1000 is designed to automate the detection and location of potential leaks, reducing the need for an operator to manually analyse distributed temperature measurements.

This provides infrastructure operators with a dedicated monitoring solution for identifying potential filtration within critical water containment structures.

Long-Distance Fiber Optic Monitoring

The system has a stated measurement range of up to 10 km with a 20 cm spatial resolution, allowing extensive linear structures to be monitored using distributed fiber optic sensing technology.

Control Centre and SCADA Integration

The solution includes the UTS-CU1000 control unit, which operates with UTS-nerVision software for configuration, measurement and data visualization.

The control unit can connect to communications infrastructure, supporting integration with control centres and SCADA systems.
